HERE&NOW14 was an ambitious exhibition held at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at The University of Western Australia from July 26 to September 27, 2014. The exhibition brought together the following emerging and established Western Australian artists to explore contemporary ceramic practices.

These artists were invited to produce new bodies of work especially for the exhibition, boldly experimenting with technique, material, and concept, showcasing the richness and diversity of ceramic practice in Western Australia.

Palmateer’s large stoneware pots, inspired by the Western Australian landscape, were noted for their textured surfaces created using materials like iron sulfate and silicon carbide. Reviewers appreciated Palmateer’s skill and thoughtfullness in throwing the ceramic forms, his dedication to his craft and his ability to evoke a sense of place through his works.

Pippin Drysdale’s porcelain vessels, depicting the Western Australian horizon with a bold and soothing colour palette, was praised for its elegance and the way it captured the essence of the landscape through refined the ceramic forms.

 Critics noted the successful blend of traditional and contemporary elements, emphasising the importance of ceramics in the broader art world. The integration of the exhibition into the university’s visual arts curriculum was also highlighted as a positive outcome, inspiring students and fostering a deeper appreciation for ceramic art.
